SSRIs and SNRIs Prescribed for Fibromyalgia

Of all 3 drugs approved by the FDA for FMS treatment, 2 of these are SNRI. They are the following:

  • Savella (milnacipran)
  • Cymbalta (duloxetine)

The other SNRIs that can be bought in the market and can be prescribed for these illnesses are:

  • Pristiq (desvenlafaxine)
  • Effexor (venlafaxine)

Serotonin Syndrome

SNRIs, SSRIs, and some other medications that help to increase the level of serotonin can potentially lead to a condition known as serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome is a dangerous condition which can be fatal. If you take more than one of these serotonin-enhancing drugs or supplements, the risk of having serotonin syndrome will increase further.

Therefore, to ensure that you do not end up with serotonin syndrome, it is very important that you inform your doctor or pharmacist of all the medications and supplements you are currently taking.
