1. Involuntary movements in your muscles

Involuntary movements in your muscles, such as spasms and cramps, are symptoms of low magnesium levels. One theory suggests that low magnesium levels allowed for an abnormal flow of calcium levels into nerve cells. This in turn overexcites the nerves in the muscles causing the spasms and cramps. In very severe cases, hypomagnesemia can lead to seizures or convulsions. However, do note that muscle spasms may not always be a sign of magnesium deficiency. These symptoms are also commonly caused by excessive consumption of caffeine or too much stress.

Magnesium supplements may help provide relief to these muscle symptoms. However, one study revealed that it may not be as effective for seniors.
