Approved For Narcolepsy Therapy But Not Yet For Fibromyalgia

Sodium oxybate, officially approved for narcolepsy therapy-related cataplexy and other sleep disorders, is a depressant of the central nervous system and contains the same active ingredient as sodium oxybate (xyrem). A joint FDA advisory committee has met to determine whether a further recommendation should be provided for the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome by the medication Nar-Co, sodium oxybate or Xyrem. The FDA’s sNDA application for new uses for the fibromalgia treatment needs further application before approval can be obtained.

The advisory committee of the Food and Drug Administration voted 20-2 to recommend the medication, known as sodium oxybate, for the fibromyalgia and narcolepsy treatment. The details about the label also warns that “sodium oxybate is a substance known to be abused.” The medication contains sodium oxybate, a chemicals notorious for their ability to get you high and relaxed. Hence, it can put women in vulnerable positions.
