Glutamate and Other Neurotransmitters
Under normal circumstances, your brain has its own way to deal with a high level of glutamate. It turns to GABA, another neurotransmitter, whose main function is to keep your brain calm when glutamate level is high.
It is crucial that the levels of glutamate and GABA in your brain are balanced. When it is not, it usually leads to glutamate-related illness. Of course, glutamate-related conditions are not only due to GABA and glutamate alone. Some other neurotransmitters, such as the melatonin, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, may also play a part.
