Treatment and Management

There is a wide range of treatments available for vulvodynia. Among these are:

  • Medications – a tricyclic antidepressant and anticonvulsant medications may help to alleviate the pain that comes with vulvodynia. But this doesn’t mean that you’re depressed. Sometimes, antihistamines are also used to relieve the itching.
  • Topical creams – sometimes, estrogen and cortisone creams are being used as treatment.
  • Myofascial release – this technique may help to ease the pain of the pelvic muscle, which also contributes to vulvodynia.

Anticonvulsants and antidepressant medications are some of the most common treatments for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Your doctor should be able to find a treatment that can work best for your condition.

Making some changes in your lifestyle may also help you manage the symptoms. Some of these changes are:

  • Avoid applying soaps and other hygiene products in your vulva.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes. Usually, people with fibromyalgia would experience discomfort when wearing tight clothing.
