Surviving The Heat With Fibromyalgia

Cooling Off

When your body is feeling overheated, you will most likely feel better if you will immediately cool yourself off. Unfortunately, ME/CFS patients will find this difficult to do compared to other people.

If you are at home, you can benefit from applying ice packs, washcloths, and cold compresses on your body. Soaking your feet with cool water is also a good idea.

Even when you are away from home, you may want to be able to cool down as well, but this will require some preparations. Here are some things that you can do:

  • Carry a cooler filled with ice, ice packs, and some cold drinks
  • Always keep some cooling products with you on hand
  • Run your hands with cold water or splash the water into your face
  • Wear layers
  • Use sandals that will not require the need to wear socks

Sometimes, cold items may be too cool for patients to tolerate and this can cause a spike in pain and trigger some other symptoms. This condition is due to a symptom known as the thermal allodynia.
