Small Fiber Neuropathy in Fibromyalgia

Details and Findings of The Study

During the study, researchers took skin biopsies on 30 individuals who are suffering from fibromyalgia, CFS, chronic pain syndrome, or any combination of these illnesses. They also took skin biopsies from a control group. The skin biopsies showed that 43% of those who have painful conditions showed evidence of having small fiber neuropathy.

Indeed, 43% is a large percentage, however, the sample size consists of only 30 individuals, which means that the result is not conclusive. However, the result of this study is promising enough to encourage more researchers to conduct even bigger studies linked to this.

According to Dr. Devanshi Gupta, the group’s lead researcher, doctors should consider checking patients for small fiber neuropathy through skin biopsies, whenever they show certain symptoms.
