Sleep Disturbances

Sleep disturbances are also a key feature of the FMS and are often coupled with sleep apnea, insomnia, and several other sleep-related disorders. In some studies, it was revealed that patients with FMS have impaired stage 4 sleep. However, those with CFS have generally no diagnosable sleep disorders. What they have instead is the “un-refreshing sleep.”

Patients who were diagnosed with FMS may also suffer from the following sleep-related movement problems.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome or RLS is a sleep-related movement disorder that can cause uneasiness, discomfort, and weariness. These symptoms could get worse when you’re at rest but will feel better once you start moving. This condition can make you stay awake since it will give you extreme discomfort while sleeping. The constant movement will also keep you awake at night.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder or PLMD is somewhat similar to Restless Leg Syndrome. Those who have PLMD tend to involuntarily contract their leg muscles after every 30 seconds when sleeping. Even though this condition will not completely wake you up, it can be disturbing during your sleep.
