Medical Treatments
9. FDA-approved medications
There are several drugs that are being used for treating fibromyalgia, but only three of them are FDA-approved to specifically treat this condition. Two of these drugs, duloxetine and milnacipran, work by boosting serotonin and norepinephrine. These are brain chemicals that encourage healthy nerve signaling. Meanwhile, the third drug, pregabalin, is thought to reduce glutamate levels, in order to treat fibromyalgia pain.
10. NSAIDs
Fibromyalgia is not a result of inflammation, which is why non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are not that always effective. However, if you are also suffering from peripheral pain conditions such as osteoarthritis, the pain can amplify the pain in the central nervous system. Thus, taking NSAIDs can help fibromyalgia sufferers by relieving the pain caused by the other co-existing conditions that they may have.
