7. Food Intolerance
About 70% of individuals who have IBS have reported that certain foods may trigger IBS symptoms. 2/3 of all patients with IBS have to avoid certain foods from their diet to prevent the symptoms.
While it is not clear why these foods may trigger IBS symptoms, it is worth noting that these foods are not allergies. Furthermore, trigger foods will not cause significant differences in digestion. And although trigger foods are different for each individual, the most common of these are FODMAPs, including gluten and lactose.
8. Fatigue and Difficulty Sleeping
Almost half of those with IBS have complained about fatigue. In a study done on 160 patients with IBS, they were found to have low stamina and have limited physical performance in leisure, work, and social interactions. Another study was done on 85 adults and found that the intensity of their IBS symptoms has predicted the severity of fatigue.
IBS has also been linked to insomnia, which also includes an inability to fall asleep, frequently waking up and feeling unrested in the following day. A study done on 112 adults who have IBS have found that 13% of them have a poor quality of sleep.
