Diagnosing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
When diagnosing a patient with MCS, the doctor will usually refer to the following criteria:
- The symptom is chronic or long-lasting.
- Symptoms are the same regardless of the amount of chemicals that the patient is exposed to.
- The symptoms are triggered by each exposure to a certain substance.
- For the “multiple” aspect, the symptoms will occur once the patient gets into contact with multiple unrelated chemicals.
- Symptoms affect more than one part of the body.
- The symptoms will improve or disappear when the chemical trigger is eliminated.
