You will be surprised to know that many have fallen prey to such nonsense due to fancy advertising combined with an interesting spiel. For example, Kevin Trudeau, author of the book, “Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About," became a New York Times best seller, retained its top spot for 25 weeks, and made millions of dollars in sales. It was later discovered that Trudeau has no medical background, but was a multiple-times convicted felon!
Trudeau’s journey
He had created a marketing firm with his former cellmate, called Nutrition for Life. The Illinois Attorney General sued them for operating a pyramid scheme, which they settled for $185,000 to Illinois and 7 other states. That “bump in the road” didn’t stop him, since he pursued other commercial avenues and utilized the infomercial as his promotional platform, leading to regulatory action by the FTC that Trudeau had to settle by shelling out $2 million. Trudeau penned a number of self-help books loaded with quasi-medical advice, one of which was the bestseller mentioned above.
