What Causes Fibromyalgia Dizziness?
1. Trigger Points in The Jaw and Neck
It is not yet known what exactly causes dizziness and balance problems in fibromyalgia. Our neck and jaw have trigger points that could trigger a feeling of imbalance and dizziness. This is probably because the trigger points affect the nerves, which send signals to the brain where the body is in space. If the signals do not match with what it gets from the eyes, this then lead to disorientation and dizziness.
2. Hypotension – Blood Pressure Drop
Those with fibromyalgia tend to have problems with their blood pressure. A drop in the blood pressure, also known as hypotension could lead to feelings of faintness and lightheadedness. Hypotension is classified into three types. These are orthostatic hypotension, neurally mediated hypotension and postprandial hypotension. Hypotension is often classified according to when your blood pressure will drop.
- Orthostatic hypotension refers to the drop of blood pressure that takes place when you suddenly transition from lying or sitting to a standing position. This will make you feel lightheaded or dizzy, and in worse cases, fainting. POTS or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome is one form of the orthostatic intolerance. It refers to the intolerance to the change of position, such as from lying down to upright position. This will lead to a dramatic increase of the heart rate and an abdominal drop on blood pressure. POTS happen due to an inadequate circulation of blood that limits the return of blood to the heart when standing.
- Neurally mediated hypotension is when there is an abnormality in the blood pressure, a result of the nervous system reflex. This can happen right after you exercise, during that period where you are standing or just sitting. It can also happen after an exposure to a very warm environment or a stressful event. Neurally mediated hypotension can lead to light headedness, chronic fatigue, recurrent fainting, exercise intolerance, nausea and cognitive dysfunction.
- Postprandial hypotension happens when there is a drop in blood pressure immediately after eating. This is usually common among people who have high blood pressure. This also occurs to those who are suffering from certain disorders that will impair the brain center that controls the nervous system.
I have low blood pressure all the time, get dizzy & feel off balance quite often! I’m sure this probably what’s causing my fibromyalgia dizziness??
Nausea all the time. I’m so tired of it.
Does anyone know what helps instead of nausea meds.
Popsicle, pretzels and peppermint gum. Works every time. Give it a try.
Ginger tea and the thin Ginger Snaps.
GINGER ALE “ALWAYS” WORKS FOR ME………I also use medicinal marijuana!
Try making fresh ginger tea….just use ginger slices in boiled water.Let it steep for 5-10 minutes, and enjoy. It takes away nausea.
Ginger tea. Have to use fresh ginger. Hot or cold works most of the time
Rosanna, try some Peppermint oil, at the base of your neck, on both temples, and across your forehead, just be careful, not to get it in your eyes !!!!! works 4 me, hopefully helps you From another Fibro warrior, Prayers, Peace n Love ✌
Peppermint tea
Try sea bands. They are located next to the Dramamine area at grocery stores. They are stretchy wrist bands with a pressure point bump. Many people wear them for motion sickness and morning sickness. It might help you.
I get pins & needles going from the top of my head down the Right side of my face & body then I pass out
I get this but on my left side
I have found that eating very healthy or on keto… And having my blood sugar and blood pressure in a good place helped me. For twenty years I was passing out and doctors would say. Oh you must have gotten over heated or some other excuse. I now eat great and take Meclizine 25 mg 3x a day. Need both to work well. Some exercise daily even while laying in bed helps too…especially with pins and needles and lots of pain. Mine has gone from can’t sleep due to pain to occasionally. My meds are way down too… I no longer do pain meds. I am managing my issues for the most part
This is very interesting cause it’s a new symptom for me having FIBRO and CFS for 20 yrs. I’m sure to others I look drunk as if I’m walking off my feet! It’s quite embarrassing at times. Another problem I’ve always had that I can’t figure out is after EATING, especially carbs????? It knocks me out and I can’t stay awake. Always make sure I’m close to home so can go to bed. Any clues as to what causes this?? Anyone else experience this problem?????
Thanks.
Dale,
It could be a sign of reactive hypoglycemia. This condition is not uncommon in fibromyalgia patients. You can read more in this article:

Hope this helps.
Me! For the last month I’ve been having terrible headaches, and dizziness that is getting worse. The Nurse Practitioner gave me a prescription for meds that I took a few years ago for vertigo. Meanwhile, I’m reeling around like a drunken sailor! I was glad to see this article about the relationship to Fibromyalgia.
I have fibromyalgia just recently been diagnosed and I’m experiencing severe headaches and ripping pain in my legs it is so hard as I work night shift and I am on my feet for long periods of time, so when I’m off I can barely move
I have lots of dizziness and lose of balance. Wasn’t sure from what but after reading this article I am sure it is due to the fibromyalgia.
Imbalance due dizziness happen of course!!..AND MANY OTHERS SYMTOMS MORE AND MORE…

After reading this I’m thoroughly convinced I have POTS or neurally mediated hypotension… I have fibro and for about 3 years I get dizzy and faint, when I walk or stand for longer than10 mins my legs and body feel like jello. All I drink is water and the doctors just say I’m dehydrated..grrr
I am trying hemp oil for 5 days and it seems being doing the job. I am feeling calm and with less pain, let see what else comes a long. So far so good. I am very happy. I hope it can help you guys also.
God bless!
Hi how much cbd oil are you taking? I have some in cupboard but not sure how much and how often? Xxx
Hi i have fibromyalgia for 3 years now i find i feel sick most days an i also get really dizziness all day long pif im playing a game on my phone i have dizziness when pass out so scary. When i go out i still have dizziness. I do not drive anymore. I have been to see my doctor she said it was to do with my fibromyalgia.
Back more than 12 yrs ago I had 24 hrs where I dare not move as my head went round and round. I had tablets based on the question “Is it you or the room going round? It was me. In the 80’s I walked from outside to my sofa and was rooted to the spot immediately with a semi fainting sensation. Then the urge to defecate was strong so forced myself to the loo nearby. After that was 45 minutes of tummy pain. I was left feeling drained. Happened twice, but 2nd time not as severe. Never had it since to the 80’s though, Was it a panic attack ?
I have all of the above. Dizziness, ringing ears, nausea’s, unbalance, cramps, allergies, back and neck pain, can’t focus, foggy memory and my worst enemy is anxiety.
I have good and bad days. Mostly bad days. I tried to keep myself occupied like cleaning and gardening. I tried not to overworked because know it will get me the next day. I have fibromyalgia for more than ten years. It’s a horrible disease. It takes away your social life and people you know who doesn’t understand this disease. They think I’m over exaggerating or somewhat crazy. Thank God my husband understand who I am today. I always take him everytime I go visit a doctor so he’ll know what I’ve been through. I am taking Lyrica for 7 or 8 years now. It helps with my pain and anxiety.
How can I find a specialist that treats Fibromyalgia? My general physician doesn’t seem to get it.
I am fortunate that the dizziness comes and goes. Right now I am having it persist. When it is at its worst I actually walk with a cane to steady myself. Overall my fibromyalgia is better and this improved with it. However, since the fibro started around the age of 9, I have just come to the realization that when I get nauseated, I usually eat something. This is one reason as my fibro got worse by weight went up. The only way I was able to combat the nausea was to keep something in my stomach.
