Potential Causes
Viral or Bacterial Infections
Both fibromyalgia and autoimmune thyroid disease have been found to occur after a person is infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. Epstein-Barr virus infections can trigger the immune system to be over-activated as a response to the infection.
Trauma
Just like with other infections, both fibromyalgia and thyroid disease is often preceded by trauma. As a response, the immune system will be activated leading to a hyperactive state. This will cause autoimmunity right after the injury.
Hormonal Problems
Fibromyalgia and thyroid disease can also occur due to some hormonal problems, such as the adrenal gland’s low production of cortisol.
