3 Stages of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

The symptoms of CRPS will vary in length and severity. Some medical experts thought that there are 3 stages involved with the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, as evidenced by the gradual changes in the muscle, joints, ligaments, skin, and bones in the affected area. However, there was no clinical research study that can validate the development of the condition as of yet.

  • Stage 1 – this stage can go on for 3 months and is often accompanied by severe and burning pain, along with stiffness of the joints and muscle spasms. This stage may also come with alterations of the blood vessels, which explain the changes in skin color and temperature.
  • Stage 2 – this stage can last for up to 6 months and this is characterized by intense pain, swelling, brittle or cracked nails, decreased hair growth, softened bones, weak muscle tone, and stiff joints.
  • Stage 3 – this stage is when the symptoms will progress even further and the changes in the bone and skin will become irreversible. The pain could get very intense and can include the entire limb. At this stage, the patient could also suffer from and involuntary contractions of tendons and muscles, extremely limited mobility, and marked muscle loss.
