5-HTP in Your Diet
Instead of taking supplements, you may be thinking of consuming foods with tryptophan in order to increase your 5-HTP levels. Unfortunately, simply increasing intake of foods rich in tryptophan will not help with any of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
This is because the tryptophan that is derived from foods is not enough to increase your 5-HTP levels. The tryptophan in these foods will also not reach your brain due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier. On the other hand, 5-HTP supplements have a higher level of tryptophan and are absorbed easily by the body. It will pass through the blood-brain barrier, which is why they are more effective compared to eating foods like turkey.
