Biofeedback For Fibromyalgia

biofeedback for fibromyalgia

Biofeedback for fibromyalgia is said to help relieve pain and stiffness. If you are suffering from morning stiffness and constant pain due to fibromyalgia, biofeedback therapy may just be the right treatment for you.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a type of alternative therapy for treating psychological and mental illnesses. It is based on a theory that influencing your body with your own willpower can reduce fibromyalgia symptoms.

The therapy uses a machine in recording electric impulses that the body emits. This can be in the form of muscle twitches, brainwaves and temperature. The machine provides “feedback” of these impulses to you through beeps and lights displayed on a monitor. For instance, if your body temperature increases, the number of beeps you will hear also increases.

The main objective of the therapy is to look for ways to lessen the amount of beeps and lights that the machine feeds to you. By doing so, your body’s electrical impulses reduce as well as your symptoms. With proper practice, you should be able to apply this technique even without a machine.

Benefits of Biofeedback for Fibromyalgia

Biofeedback therapy can help treat several types of illnesses. These includes fatigue, paralysis and pain disorders. The therapy is also beneficial in treating some psychological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder. Moreover, biofeedback has also been proven to be useful in reducing several fibromyalgia symptoms.

How Does Biofeedback for Fibromyalgia Work?

The therapy works by teaching you to better understand your body’s reactions to stress. When exposed to stress, whether it is physical or emotional, your body responds in many ways. For instance, your heart beats faster and your hands feel colder. Through the beeps and lights, you will be able to better understand how your body feels. Thus, biofeedback is the kind of therapy that helps you to be more attuned to the needs of your body.

Biofeedback therapy also uses rewards in getting you to correct your body’s disturbances. During the therapy session, you are rewarded for minimizing your stress through the reduction of lights and beeps. When you practice well enough, eventually, your body gets used to correcting itself automatically.

In fact, in a recent study, several fibromyalgia patients who joined biofeedback sessions have experienced significant decrease in their tender points. Furthermore, they have also shown improvements inn their pain symptoms and muscle stiffness. These benefits have lasted up to six months.
