Why Are Fibromyalgia Patients Sensitive to Heat
First of all, this may have something to do with the fact that most FMS and ME/CFS patients are sensitive to either cold or heat. Compared to other people, they tend to physiologically respond more to temperature. As of now, it is not yet clear what causes these symptoms, but it may be due to the dysfunction of our autonomic nervous system, which is a component of the nervous system that deals with homeostasis.
Homeostasis is a condition where the body is trying to keep itself regulated and stable in specific ways. Our heart is beating at a certain speed while we are breathing in and out at a particular speed, but our internal temperature remains within a certain parameter.
However, for these conditions, homeostasis does not seem to do a good job for certain things. Basically, the bodies of FMS and ME/CFS patients are not able to properly regulate our temperature, which is why we are more easily affected by the surroundings than healthy people.
This symptom is not easy to deal with. As a matter of fact, none of the common treatments for these conditions have attempted to target it. Therefore, the patients have no choice but to manage these conditions on their own. They will have to find ways on how to keep themselves cool whenever they feel warm or if their body is overheating. More importantly, they need to protect themselves from becoming too hot.
