How Does Antidepressants Cause Weight Gain?

There are various theories when it comes to why antidepressants lead to weight gain. It was found that while improving mood, anti-depressants simultaneously increase carbohydrate cravings and cravings for comfort food for which are difficult to control. Antidepressants are also thought to increase appetite to trick the body to eat more to satiate the hunger. In both cases, patients on specific antidepressants are subconsciously overeating without realizing it. Some also believe that the medications can alter metabolism.
