The Link Between Fibromyalgia and Thyroid Disease

Shared Symptoms

Fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism are known to have similar symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms found on patients with fibromyalgia and those with hypothyroidism are the following:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Body aches including pain in the muscles and joints
  • Cognitive problems, also known as “brain fog”
  • Fatigue, exhaustion, and non-restful sleep

On the other hand, there are symptoms which appears more often in each of the condition. In hypothyroidism, patients are more likely to put on weight, constipate, and have irregular periods, dry skin and hair loss. In fibromyalgia, patients are more likely to experience paresthesia, muscle spasm and headaches.

If both condition co-exist in patients, it can lead to more severe symptoms and affect treatment.
