Causes and Risks Associated with Cervical Dystonia

The exact causes of cervical dystonia are not yet known. However, those who have this condition have been found to have a family history of cervical dystonia. Because of this, experts believe that this illness has a genetic component.  In addition, some patients who were diagnosed with this condition were found to have injuries in their neck, head, and shoulder. Below are some of the risk factors of this condition:

  • Age – even though cervical dystonia can occur at any age, it was found to be common on those who are over the age of 30.
  • Sex – the condition is more common in women than men, although there are a few men who have been found to have this condition.
  • Family history – if a member of your family has the condition, there is a good chance that you will be diagnosed with this condition as well.

It is important to note that those who developed cervical dystonia have also suffered from other complications as a result of this. The condition may also affect some other areas of the body, such as the jaw, abdomen, face, and arms.
