2. Abnormalities in the brain stem

Another theory that was put forth in respect to the breathing difficulties faced by fibromyalgia patients suggest that patients are actually not experiencing it. A 1989 study published in Journal of Internal Medicine suggest that Dyspnea could be due to abnormal behaviors of the brain stem. Although there was a lack of evidence, a later study published in 2000, in Arthritis and Rheumatism supported this theory with its finding which showed that the flow of blood in the brain stem area is low among the FMS patients.

3. Lack of thyroid hormone regulation

Another speculation behind the cause of Dyspnea in fibromyalgia patients is directed to the thyroid. There is a significant overlap between hyperthyroidism and fibromyalgia. It was found that 15% of people suffering from hyperthyroidism develop fibromyalgia later. As shortness of breath is a known symptom of hyperthyroid, experts believe that breathing difficulties in fibromyalgia is somewhat linked to a subnormal thyroid hormone regulation. The abnormality weakens the respiratory muscle, affects the contractions of the diaphragm, hence causing breathing difficulties
