How is fibromyalgia linked to restless leg syndrome?

Both fibromyalgia and restless leg syndrome comes under neurological conditions and both condition are more commonly found in females. According to a 2009 study, 64% of fibromyalgia patients also suffer from restless leg syndrome. These group of patients suffer from more severe sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness. However, the mystery of why the two conditions often take place together and occurs frequently is still unknown. Both fibromyalgia and RLS share many common symptoms.

Some common symptoms of both the conditions include

  • Sleeping difficulties: The patients lack good restorative sleep in the night.

  • Brain fog: Patients lack concentration and focus in both conditions.

  • Fatigue: Patients lack energy in the day

Apart from this, in both the conditions patients also feel discomfort in legs and experience extreme unbearable pain. However, some unique symptoms restless leg syndrome which are not similar or attached with fibromyalgia like the peculiar, unpleasant or odd sensations on the legs.


Diagnosis of restless leg syndrome

There is no particular set of tests or procedure, which is used by doctors to identify the restless leg syndrome in the body. Generally, it is examined on the basis of the patient's medical history and symptoms of the problem. Doctor would consider the patient’s ability to move the legs with or without any uncomfortable sensations, the patient’s ability to obtain restorative sleep etc.
