Premenstrual Dysphoric Syndrome (PMDD) in Fibromyalgia

How to Treat PMDD

There are both medical treatments and natural home remedies for dealing with PMDD in fibromyalgia patients:

  • Antidepressants – if you visit your doctor to address your PMDD symptoms, he or she may place you on an antidepressant. Studies show that the antidepressants help alleviate some of the symptoms of PMDD.
  • Hormone Therapy – some doctors may also recommend hormone therapy. However, this has not been proven to be effective for treating PMDD. Hormone therapy is often used as a secondary measure.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – Natural remedies may also be used and mostly involve simple lifestyle changes. For example, some women report experiencing fewer PMDD symptoms after increasing their intake of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids may help reduce depression, headaches, bloating, and breast tenderness.

While PMDD and fibromyalgia are both conditions without known causes or proven treatments, there are ways to address the symptoms. If you suffer from either condition, consider working with your doctor or gynecologist to develop a treatment plan.
